Other Similar Creatures

  • Hobgoblin – According to most folklore and fictional sources, a hobgoblin is the happier, and more friendly version of the goblin, or at least, a close cousin in the same fairy ilk. While the hobgoblin is still troublesome, they usually are not as mean spirited.
  • Redcap – Redcaps are a type of goblin as well, but though goblins are believed in folklore to be mean spirited, redcaps are further implicated as being downright evil. The most famous of the redcaps was Robin Redcap, and a familiar to William de Soulis at Hermitage Castle, committing many murders, raping women, and just generally wreaking all kinds of chaos.
  • Imp – They were believed to have been kept inside amulets, jewels, or tiny bottles in order to serve witches in their spells, or as familiars. They come from Germanic tradition in origin, and are more mischievous than evil.
  • Gremlin – Originated in Old English, from the word “gremian” which means, to vex. However, they are unique, and are specifically a plague to airplanes, and air travel. Specifically, the word became more popularly used in slang in the Royal Air Force. Gremlins cause mechanical failure, and terror in the sky, which leads to fatal crashes. A decidedly malevolent race of goblin like creatures.
  • Kallikantzaroi – In Greek and old Cypriot legend, the Kallikantzaroi are a malevolent kind of goblin whose main purpose it is to eat away at the roots of the World Tree, with the main purpose of killing it. Only during the winter solstice are they allowed to leave their underground homes to run around causing chaos.
  • Kobold – Three main types, –subterranean kobolds, which are evil and hideous, house and water kobolds, which are generous and helpful, though usually invisible. When they are visible, the two benevolent classes are usually dressed in peasant’s clothing. The third is wickedly repulsive, and deformed.
